Oberlin Student Wins 2006 Piano/Ohio Competition
: Yejin Lee, a junior at Lake Ridge Academy and resident
of Oberlin, was judged the winner of PIANO/OHIO, a piano competition
for high school students sponsored by the Cleveland International Piano
Competition. The competition was held Sunday at The Cleveland
Play House and broadcast live on WCLV 104.9 FM.
Miss Lee studies with Haewon Song at the Oberlin College Conservatory
of Music. She has performed in the Kumho Art Hall in Seoul,
Korea, and won several awards, including third prize at the Oberlin
International Piano Competition.
As the winner of the PIANO/OHIO competition, Ms. Lee received a cash
award of $1000. She and the other six finalists also received:
• Tickets to the 2007 Cleveland International Piano
Competition, including the final round concerto performances with the
Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall.
• A master class coached by Ohio native Spencer Myer,
fourth prize winner of the 2005 Cleveland International Piano
Competition.
• An invitation to perform live on WCLV during the Competition’s two-day Radiothon fundraiser in June, 2007.
In addition to Miss Lee, the winners were:
SECOND PRIZE
Cash award of $750
Yihao (Harold) Wu, Strongsville. Mr. Wu is a senior at Solon High
School. He studies with Gerardo Teissonniere at the Cleveland
Institute of Music.
THIRD PRIZE
Cash award of $500
Katrina Celeste Bobbs, Pepper Pike. Miss Bobbs is a home-schooled
junior. She studies with Alvin Chow at the Oberlin College
Conservatory of Music.
FINALISTS
Cash award of $250
Konrad Binienda, Akron. Mr. Binienda is a junior at Firestone
High School. He studies with Gerardo Teissonniere at the
Cleveland Institute of Music.
Kei Niedra, North Ridgeville. Mr. Niedra is a sophomore at Lake
Ridge Academy. He studies with Haewon Song at the Oberlin College
Conservatory of Music.
Yue Qi, Shaker Heights. Miss Qi is a sophomore at Shaker Heights High School. She studies with Lucia Markovich.
A field of nearly 40 students participated in qualifying rounds held at
Steinway piano dealer locations in Akron/Cleveland, Columbus, and
Cincinnati. Six were selected to advance to Sunday’s final round.
All students were required to prepare 20 minutes of music to be played
from memory. They were permitted to select works from a broad
range of composers that included Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann,
Schubert, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Bartok.
The final round of PIANO/OHIO was judged by an esteemed panel of
laureates from the Cleveland International Piano Competition, including:
• Ms. Chu-Fang Huang, China, first prize winner, 2005
• Mr. Spencer Myer, United States, fourth prize winner, 2005
• Mr. Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Italy, first prize winner, 1999
• Mr. Dror Biran, Israel, fourth prize winner, 1997
Dr. John Flower, Chairman of the Education Committee at the Cleveland
International Piano Competition, served as the non-voting chairman of
the jury.
